Concept-Based Explanations

Rather than explaining in terms of raw features, concept-based approaches map model reasoning to human-understandable concepts: "creditworthiness," "financial stability," "repayment capacity." This makes explanations meaningful to both regulators and applicants.

Building a Compliant AI Lending Pipeline

  1. Bias testing: Regularly test models for disparate impact across protected classes
  2. Feature governance: Maintain a registry of all features with fairness assessments
  3. Explanation generation: Automatically produce adverse action notices with specific factors
  4. Model monitoring: Track performance drift and fairness metrics in production
  5. Human oversight: Define escalation paths for edge cases requiring human judgment
